Dr. Thomas Farris
Dr. Thomas E. Farris died peacefully at his home in San Luis Obispo, Calif., on Christmas day surrounded by family and friends.
He was born July 14, 1947, on Midway Island, Territory of Hawaii, the second son of CSM Will Farris and his wife Mildred.
He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1968 and spen many years in the computer indusstry. In middle age he returned to school, earning a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Califonia, Davis, at age 57. He taught physics at California Polytechnic University and Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo until debility from Parkinson Disease/Multiple Systems Atrophy forced his retirement in 2013.
He read widely, was an accomplished musician, and loved camping in the Western deserts and mountains. All who knew him will miss his kindness and dry humor.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Virginia Schubert, formerly of Okawville; his brothers, Will and Mike Farris of California; and other family and friends who extend from California to the New York Islands.
A memorial service will be held in the San Francisco area in the spring.
