Stephen N. Spihlmann, 29, of Carlyle, was arrested and charged with retail theft, for allegedly taking possession of 8.0836 gallons of gasoline from Kemps Korner in New Minden on Dec. 23, 2014, a Class A Misdemeanor. At a Jan. 2 court appearance, on a motion of the state and at the request of the victim, the arrest warrant was quashed and the case was dismissed.

Matthew E. Smith, 29, of Coulterville, was arrested and charged with battery for allegedly striking another individual in the chest with his fist on August 16, 2014. At a Jan. 6 court appearance, Smith appeared with counsel and plead guilty to the charge. He was sentenced to 12 months of conditional discharge. He was assessed fines and costs, totaling $450. Smith was also ordered to continue counseling and to file proof of completion.
