Breese Coach Honored And Humbled By Team’s Win Of Hawkins Award

Dear Nashville High School Sports Community,

I would like to take the opportunity to let your community, the administrators and the tournament staff at NCHS know how honored and humbled I was when our basketball team won the “Don Hawkins Sportsmanship Award” at the 2015 Nashville Invitational Tournament this past week. This award since its inception in 2002 has been one of those honors that represents a man who made the character traits of class, honesty and integrity essential components to his involvement with high school athletes from all communities. I believe that it was very important to Mr. Hawkins that high school athletes use sports and the opportunities competition create to make them better individuals in the future. It is from school leaders like Coach Hawkins and other high school coaches that I have either played for or coached with that have helped me to develop my coaching philosophies and team goals.

I can remember back 15 years ago when I brought the Central boys golf team to a match in Nashville. Coach Hawkins was running the match and when it was time to start, all the team players and coaches met around the putting green. The welcome and presentation that Hawk made to all the participants was the best I’ve ever heard. Coach Hawkins did not just go over the match rules and format, but more importantly spoke about how the game of golf and a match between four schools could lead to ever lasting friendships and life lessons as the match was carried out. He encouraged all the participants to communicate and get to know each other while also being respectful and fair utilizing golf course etiquette in the whole process. Moreover, he also made sure that the young men competing displayed sportsmanship in their playing groups toward one another. For me as a coach that day, Mr. Hawkins’ message again made me realize how influential coaches and teachers are in the eyes of their players and students.

Again, I can not tell you how much this recognition means to myself and our basketball team. Sportsmanship is a character trait that I attempt to demonstrate and instill to all the players I coach. The 2015 NIT was an outstanding tournament filled with great basketball teams and coaches. I believe that Coach Hawkins would have been very proud of the way the players, coaches and fans conducted themselves during the event. Congratulations to the Nashville Hornets and Teutopolis Wooden Shoes for winning this years tournament. It was a fun week of basketball.
