St. Ann Comes Up Short At State Tournament

After capturing a regional title with a win over St. Libory Jan. 31, the St. Ann Saints were knocked out in the first round of the SIJHSAA Class S State Tournament by Ewing.

In the regional, St. Ann beat Trinity-St. John 56-39 to advance to the championship game.

The Saints trailed after the first quarter but pulled ahead with a 9-4 run in the second quarter before outscoring the Titans 39-23 in the second half to notch the win.

Terry Pelczynski led the scoring for St. Ann with 16. Jacob Maschhoff and Todd Jahnke also hit double figures in points with 14 and ten, respectively. Tabor Kozuszek netted eight points, and Ethan Herzog, Lane Henderson, Patrick Combs and Nicholas Orr chipped in two points apiece.

In the regional championship, the Saints withstood a late charge by St. Libory to notch the 38-36 win.

St. Ann trailed at halftime, but thundered back into the game with a big third quarter and then held on in the fourth quarter to claim the regional championship.

Pelczynski was the lone Saint to score in double figures with 11 points. Jahnke scored nine points, Kozuszek adde eight and Maschhoff and Herzog both finished with five points in the win.

A big game from Pelczynski was not enough for St. Ann in the first round of the state tournament at Rend Lake, as Ewing knocked off the Saints 51-47.

St. Ann trailed for most of the first half before pulling ahead in the third quarter. But Ewing outscored the Saints in the fourth quarter to put an end to their season.

Pelczynski poured in 21 points to lead his squad on the offensive end. Kozuszek and Jahnke had seven apiece, Maschhoff scored five, Henderson added four and Herzog finished with three.

St. Ann finished the season with a record of 19-9.
