Frederick “Fred” Paul Heston, 76, of Cape Coral, FL died Wednesday Feb. 4, 2015 while at Cape Coral Hope Hospice.
Fred was born on April 19, 1938 to Florence E. and Arthur P. Heston in Keokuk, Iowa. Fred graduated from Keokuk High School in 1956 and was stationed in Korea in the early 60’s with the Armed Forces. After he was discharged from the service, he worked and lived in Keokuk until 1965 at which time he transferred to Iowa City, Iowa, where he met and married his wife Gloria (Djerf) Hemsted in 1973.
Fred worked for Sheller Globe for many years early in his career and then retired from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinic’s Central Sterilizing Department in 1998 after 22 years of service. After retirement Fred moved to Nashville with his wife Gloria and lived on their “Ponderosa” for ten years. Fred then moved to Cape Coral, Fla., so he and Gloria could enjoy retirement in paradise. Fred was loved dearly by all his family, friends, co-workers and pets. Fred was proud to be a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan.
Fred is survived by his wife Gloria of Cape Coral, Fla.; son Shaun Hemsted (Brenda) of Ankeny, Iowa; three grandchildren, Jordan Hemsted (Ankeny), Nicholas Hemsted (Ankeny), Ryan Hemsted (Ankeny). He is also survived by three nephews and four nieces.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Doris Trout (Robert) and Annette Benedict (Gene); and son Scott Hemsted.
A memorial service celebrating Fred’s life will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, May 30 at the Gay and Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Online condolences can be sent to his family at www.gayandciha.com.
