It’s a MILESTONE year for the annual “With the Dogs” 5K which began back in 2006 after the death of former Nashville resident Jeanenne Thompson from Pancreatic Cancer. This year marks the 10th year for the event and the year that the Foundation will surpass the $200,000 Cumulative Lifetime Giving to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. The event will be held on Saturday, June 6th at 7:30 am at Memorial Park.
The Foundation and event was a way for Christi Thompson Merritt and Carolyn Detering to honor their mother and sister’s valiant fight against Pancreatic Cancer. It is a disease with only a 6% 5 year survival rate but yet is the least funded of all forms of cancer. The event was designed to raise awareness of the disease and help raise funding to help find early detection methods (there are none) and treatment options (which are little to none).
The event pays tribute to those who have lost their fight, most recently Nashville doctor Gary Goforth and Nashville resident Jan Thompson. This year’s guest speaker is 31 year old Celeste Malick of Scheller who is currently fighting the disease.
The deadline to be a part of this milestone event is Saturday, May 15th. The entry fee is $20 and that includes your t-shirt and dog bandana. You do not have to have a 4-legged companion to participate. You can register directly online at www.jthompsonwalkwiththedogs.com or download an entry form there and either mail it in or drop it off with Detering. Registrations will be accepted up until the morning of the event but a t-shirt is not guaranteed. Any questions, call Detering at 327.3976 or Merritt at 615.444.3190.
