Launius Receives Honorary FFA State Degree

Dr. Steve Launius of Nashville received the Honorary State FFA Degree at the 87th Illinois State FFA Convention in Springfield on June 11, 2015. It is the highest honor that can be presented by the Illinois FFA. The purpose of the degree is to honor individuals who have provided outstanding service to agriculture, agricultural education and the FFA program.

Launius holds a BS degree in agricultural education and a MS degree in agricultural economics from SIU-Carbondale.

He began his educational career as the Vo-Ag teacher FFA advisor at Central H.S. in Breese. He continued to advance his career as a school principal and later as a Illinois School Superintendent. He served Community Colleges as an adult education coordinator for SWIC in Belleville and as a member of the Advisory committee at Kaskaskia College in Centralia. He also served as a teaching assistant at SIU-Carbondale.

He began his service with the Clinton County Fair Board in 1980, currently Superintendent of Agricultural Products and Horticulture. Launius is the current secretary of the Board of the Washington County Farm Bureau. He has served as the Covington Twp Director since 1985. The Illinois Farm Bureau has selected him for various state committees, marketing and leadership activities and two market study trips to China and Canada. The Illinois Soybean Association selected having for a two year term as Soy-Ambassador, during this time trade promotion trips were made to Japan, Taiwan Guatemala and Nicaragua. He is currently serving his second term as a member of the Illinois 4-H Foundation and is an active attendee of the St. Louis Agricultural Business Club.

He is the past Secretary of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hoyleton and Council President of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Troy. He is a charter member and past president of the Addieville Area Jaycees, current member and past Secretary of the Addieville Community Club, member of the Agricultural Committee of Congressman Shimkus, member of the Son’s of the American Revolution, member of the Order of Kentucky Colonels and a member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. Launius is a graduate of Triad High School and is a 6th generation Illinois Centennial Farmer residing in rural Nashville. When asked about his greatest accomplishment for agriculture, he responded “Starting the Washington County Farm Bureau Scholarship Program and the Addieville Jaycees Scholarship Program. It has helped young individuals advance themselves and hopefully in the future they can reward others.”
