Planning and fundraising for the annual St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament are again underway. With a goal of supporting the Centralia hospital in its mission to provide quality, cost-effective care to all of those in the region, this fifth annual event will be held Friday, Sept. 18, at the newly renovated Greenview Golf Club in Centralia.
Dimond Bros., LLC, in partnership with The Hanover Insurance Group, has again signed on as the major sponsor of this year’s tournament, with a generous donation of $5,000. Former Major League Baseball pitcher Kirk Rueter will serve as honorary chairman of the tournament. Rueter, a native of Hoyleton, played for the Montreal Expos and San Francisco Giants as a starting pitcher for 12 seasons before retiring in 2005.

Niermann added, “We are honored again this year to have Kirk Rueter actively involved in this event and lending his support as well. Many know his name as a baseball player both here and across the country, but having worked with him for five years now, the hospital Foundation and local residents are aware also of his strong spirit of generosity and charity. We appreciate his efforts to help St. Mary’s Hospital and its patients.”
Registration and lunch will be held from 10 a.m. until 11:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. A dinner and awards ceremony will be held following play. As in the past, an oral auction will be held for a Tour of Kirk Rueter’s “The Shed” located in Nashville, IL. Items for auction are currently being planned; past items have included a St. Louis Cardinals game package, new golf bags, and a catered meal for a party. Cash and other prizes will be awarded for closest to the pin, the longest drive, the longest putt and many more achievements throughout the day. Souvenir gifts for players and sponsors are available for those registered. Should rain force postponement of the scramble, it will be held the following day, Saturday, Sept. 19.
Sponsorship opportunities remain available for the Fifth Annual St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation Golf Tournament. Eagle Level sponsors ($2,500) will receive a team of four entered in the tournament with lunch, refreshments, dinner and souvenir gifts, as well as cart and hole sponsorship signs, listing in the program and on a banner, four extra dinner tickets and four extra souvenir gifts.
Birdie Level sponsorship ($1,500) includes a team of four entered in the tournament with lunch, refreshments, dinner and souvenir gifts, and similar sponsorship signs. Team Sponsors ($1,000) will receive a team with lunch, refreshments, dinner, and sponsorship signage, as well.
Tee sponsorships ($200) will include custom golf ball-shaped signage with a logo at one of the holes on the course. Hole sponsorship ($100) includes signage at one of the holes, while cart sponsorship ($50) includes signage for an individual or company on one of the golf carts.
Registration is limited and may be obtained by calling the Foundation Office at (618) 436-6455. Cost for a team of four is $500. Dinner guests may join the dinner and oral auction festivities for $25, paid in advance.
“This is not only a fun day of golf but a great way to support St. Mary’s Hospital,” said Niermann. “Proceeds will be used to upgrade medical equipment and facilities and provide exceptional patient care and education. By participating in our golf scramble, you will be making a positive impact on the quality of care provided to the patients of St. Mary’s Hospital.”
