Both the boys and girls cross country teams were back out on the course as they took on the 3 mile course at the Redbird Invitational that was held at West Frankfort City Park on Thursday, September 10.
The boys team took first place overall in the meet with 54 points. The team was led by sophomore Brandon Schnitker who came across the line first overall with a time of 15:56. He was followed by senior Jackson Pierce who finished sixth overall with a time of 17:02. Ryan Kell finished third on the team for the Hornets, coming across with a time of 17:27, which was good for eleventh place. Caleb Zgonina finished fourth on the team and Landon Davis fifth with times of 17:47 and 18:23 respectively. Herrin and Sparta finished second and third in the meet.
The girls team also had success finishing second in the meet with a score of 82. The Hornettes were led by freshman Grace Maschhoff who came across the line in eighth with a time of 20:58. Fellow freshman Brittnie Bartling finished second on the team with a time of 21:45, good for eleventh place. Jaylyn Bower crossed the line third for the team with a time of 22:13. She was followed by junior Taylor Cook who finished in 23rd position with a time of 23:00. Rounding out the top five runners for the Hornettes was senior Tianna Kozuszek who winished with a time of 23:47. Herrin got first in the meet and Sparta finished in third.
The teams are back in action twice next week as on Tuesday, September 15 the team takes on the course at the Sparta Invitational at Municipal Pool and then on Thrusday, September 17 at the DuQQuoin Invite, which will be held at the state fairgrounds
