The St. Ann/TSJ baseball team won their regional after defeating Hoyleton, Mt. Vernon/St. Mary, and Woodlawn in the SIJHSAA Region 6 Class S Baseball Regional which was held at Woodlawn.
The St. Ann/TSJ baseball team got the regional underway as they played Hoyleton at home on Wednesday September 23. The St. Ann/TSJ baseball team defeated Hoyleton 12-1 in just 5 innings. St. Ann/TSJ got off to a hot start plating four runs in each of the first two innings, to take an 8-0 lead through the first two innings. Hoyleton got their lone run of the game in the third inning. St. Ann/TSJ would add on an additional four runs in the third to put the game out of reach. Chad Brinkmann pitched all five innings for St. Ann/TSJ striking out eight batters. Cole Malawy went 2-3 with 2 runs scored 4 RBIs and 2 stolen bases in the game. Chad Brinkmann was also successful with the bat going 3-3 in the game with 3 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Trent “Boomer” Harris added another 3 hits and 4 RBIs while Terry Pelczynski added an additional 2 RBIs in the win.
The St. Ann/TSJ baseball team moved on to face Mt. Vernon/St. Mary. St. Ann/TSJ defeated Mt Vernon/St. Mary 4-2 in eight innings. St. Ann/TSJ fell behind early as they trailed 2-0 after three innings. St. Ann/TSJ would come back to tie the game in the fourth inning when Harris and Pelczynski both walked and came around to score. The game would stay tied until the eighth inning when St. Ann/TSJ broke through for two runs. St. Ann/TSJ were able to hold on for the win 4-2. Harris pitched the first four innings for St. Ann/TSJ before Pelczynski came in for the final four innings in relief. Overall the two struck out 11 batters, 9 of which were from Pelczynski. Harris was also productive with the bat going 1-2 with 2 runs scored a RBI, and 2 walks. Brayden Bauza added an RBI for St. Ann/TSJ. Malawy and Brinkmann each added a hit in the win.
That set up the regional championship matchup between St. Ann/TSJ and Woodlawn. St. Ann/TSJ picked up a run in the first, but Woodlawn came right back with two runs of their own to take the lead 2-1 after the first inning. Woodlawn would add an additional run in the second, two runs the third, and a run in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead going into the fifth. The offense of St. Ann/TSJ came alive in the fifth inning scoring three runs. St. Ann/TSJ would add four more runs in the sixth to take an 8-6 lead going into the seventh. Pelczynski would close the game out giving St. Ann/TSJ the win 8-6 and the regional championship. Pelczynski pitched all seven innings giving up 6 runs, 3 earned, 2 walks, and recording 7 strikeouts. Brinkman led the offense going 2-4 with 2 runs scored, 3 RBIs, and 2 stolen bases. Harris and Malawy each added an RBI in the game. Pelczynski, Tyler Schill and Bauza each added a hit to help St. Ann/TSJ in the win.
After winning their regional, St. Ann/TSJ moved on to the state tournament where they lost to Altamont Lutheran 4-3 in Coulterville on Saturday.
The game stayed scoreless until the third inning when Altamont Lutheran got on the board scoring a run taking the lead. St. Ann/TSJ would load the bases in the bottom half of the third but could not get a run across in the inning. St. Ann/TSJ would tie the game in the fifth when Chad Brinkmann was hit by a pitch and came around to score on an error. The game would not stay tied as Altamont Lutheran scored three in the top of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. St. Ann/TSJ would come back with two runs of their own in the sixth but could not tie the game. With the tying run on base in the bottom of the seventh, Jacob Rowell battled in a 9 pitch at bat, but could not get the tying run home as St. Ann/TSJ fell 4-3.
Nick Miller and Brayden Bauza each went 2-3 in the game with a walk. Tyler Schill, Chad Brinkmann, and Cole Malawy each added a hit for St. Ann/TSJ. Although he didn’t record a hit, Logan Eversgerd got on base three times via the walk and scored a run. Terry Pelczynski pitched all seven innings in the game striking out six batters.
