St. Ann/TSJ Softball Falls Just Short At Regionals

The St. Ann/TSJ softball team just fell short of a regional crown, when they lost to Woodlawn on September 28. The road to the regional final saw St. Ann/TSJ defeat Aviston in their final regular season matchup before defeating Hoyleton and Waltonville at regionals.

The St. Ann/TSJ team began with their final regular season matchup in which they defeated Aviston 4-2 on September 21. St. Ann/TSJ fell behind early in the game giving up one run in the top of the first inning. St. Ann/TSJ came back to take the lead for good in the second, scoring three runs. St. Ann/TSJ would add another run in the third. The offense was led by Taylor Rapp who went 2-3 in the game with a walk. Cayla Krueger, Abby Wesselman, Hailey Kessler, Abby Maschhoff, and Ruby Konkel each added a walk in the game. Kyleigh Guinzy added a double in the game to go along with 2 walks.

The St. Ann/TSJ team then began the regionals as they cruised to a 13-1 win over Hoyleton on September 23. After scoring a run in the first, St. Ann/TSJ broke the game open in the second plating 9 runs. That was more than enough for Kyleigh Guinzy as she struck out 10 Hoyleton batters in the game. Taylor Rapp went 3-3 in the game with 2 runs scored. Abby Wesselman, Cayla Krueger, Hailey Kessler, Abby Maschhoff, and Reese Varel each added two hits in the game. Katie May crossed the plate for two runs in the win.

St. Ann/TSJ again crusied to their second straight regional win as they defeated Waltonville 7-1 on September 25. Waltonville scored a run in the first ining, but their batters were baffled as they struck out 11 times in the game. St. Ann/TSJ scored two runs in the first and didn't look back, plating two more in the second, one in the third and their final two runs in the seventh inning. Katie May went 3-4 in the game with a double. Abby Wesselman went 2-4 with a run scored. Cayla Krueger, Kyleigh Guinzy, Taylor Rapp, Abby Maschhoff, and Reese Varel each added a hit in the game. Colleen Jahnke did not record a hit but walked and came around to score in the game.

That set up the regional final as St. Ann/TSJ took on Woodlawn on September 28. Woodlawn would take the close game 9-6. St. Ann/TSJ got off to a hot start scoring the first two runs of the game in the first inning. Woodlawn would come back in the game, scoring six runs in the second inning. Woodlawn would add insurance runs in the third and the fourth before St. Ann/TSJ got back on the board in the fifth plating two runs. After a Woodlawn run in the sixth, Woodlawn held a 9-4 lead going into the seventh. St. Ann/TSJ would mount a rally but would only manage two runs in the seventh. Katie May finished the game 3-4 with a double. Abby Wesselman and Taylor Rapp each had two hits in the game. Reese Varel and Kyleigh Guinzy each contributed a hit in the loss. The loss ended the season for the St. Ann/TSJ softball team with their record at 11-6.
