Doris Backs
Mrs. Doris Jean Backs who lived in Okawville, for most of her life and most recently resided in a nursing home in Springfield, departed this life in the Memorial Medical Center in Springfield on Monday, September 7, 2015 at 5:33 P.M. She had attained the age of 81 years and 10 days.
Doris was born in Okawville on August 27, 1934 the daughter of Theodore and Mary (nee Bening) Weihe. She was united in marriage to Alvin Backs on August 23, 1953 in the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Okawville, and he preceded her in death in 2011.
Doris was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Okawville for many years and later joined Our Savior Lutheran Church in Springfield. Doris held various jobs including working as the bookkeeper for her husband Alvin’s businesses. She loved music, singing in the church choir earlier in her life and also served as President of the Okawville High School Music Patrons. When asked about the greatest accomplishment in her life, she said it was her family.
Left to mourn her passing are her five children, Craig Backs and wife Patti of Springfield, Janet Bartlett and husband Michael of Bothell, Wa., Kathy Lintker and husband Charles of Venedy, Lori Garber and husband Victor of Chicago, and Timothy Backs and wife Ayanna of Allen; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a sister-in-law; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews as well as a host of friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Loraine Blumhorst and husband Ralph; and two brothers-in-law, Irwin Backs and wife Darleen and Milton Backs and wife Marjorie.
In accordance with the wishes of the family, cremation was performed.
Memorial services will be held from the Immanuel
Lutheran Church in Okawville on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. with Pastor Eric Wood officiating. Interment of ashes will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the
Immanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 17 from 11:00 A.M. until the service hour.
Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Okawville or to the Okawville High School Music Patrons and will be accepted by the Campagna Funeral Home.
