Back to Basics: Knitting for Beginners

If you have always wanted to learn to knit but never took the time, this is your chance. Just in time for the cooler weather and the holidays University of Illinois Extension will host a two day workshop for absolute beginners. The class will be taught at the Carlyle Library, Carlyle Illinois on November 3rd and 10th from 5:30pm-6:00pm.

In just two sessions you will learn to master the basic stitches of casting on and off along with the knit and pearl stitch. These are the foundation stitches for hundreds of projects. By alternating the knit and pearl stiches you will create new stitches like the seed, moss, basket weave, create patterns, and more. The combinations create beautiful textures. Add any of the specialty yarns available today with the basic stiches and you will be creating afghans, scarfs, dish cloths, cowl wraps, shawls, handbags and more. No one will believe it is just two simple stiches.

Instructor Bette Rotert previously owned a yarn shop and has recently moved back to the area. She wants to share her passion for knitting. Knitting is considered one of the lost arts and is why Extension has included it in the ‘Back to Basics’ workshops.

This class is open to ages 12 and up and would be a perfect class for a parent to take with a child or to treat yourself to a special night with friends. Before you know it you will be knitting away and creating projects on your own.

There is a 10.00 fee to register for this two night class. The fee will include a pair of bamboo knitting needles along with a ball of natural fiber yarn. The needles are yours to keep after the class is over. Along with your projects you have created.

To register please call 618-526-4551 or online at http://web.extension.illinois.edu/bcjmw/ by October 26.
