The St. Ann Saints boys basketball team got their season underway as they began play in the Pinckneyville #204 Fall Classic Tournament that took place between October 17 and October 23.
In St. Ann's first matchup, the Saints took on Chester. The Saints go off to a fast start, as they jumped out to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter. The Saints continued their offensive onslaught in the second scoring another 12 points. At halftime St. Ann led Chester 26-8. St. Ann came out in the second half and again outscored Chester 13-8 in the third quarter to extend their lead. St. Ann cruised in the fourth and won the game 47-27. Leading the Saints was Terry Pelczynski with 15 points in the game.Logan Eversgerd reached double digits with 12 points as well as Cole Malawy who had 10 in the contest. Nick Miller added 8 points and Aaron Stanowski added 2 to round out the scoring for the Saints.
The Saints played their second game of the season against Bartelso. Bartelso came out strong in the first quarter, taking a 16-7 lead. St. Ann came back with a fury in the second quarter and were leading at halftime 22-21 after outscoring Bartelso 15-5 in the second quarter. The second half belonged to Bartleso as the Braves outscored the Saints 33-9 in the second half to go on and win the game 54-31. Pelczynski again led the Saints in scoring with 17 points in the game, 12 of which came in the second quarter. Eversgerd was the only other St. Ann player in double digits as he scored 10 points in the game. Cole Malawy and Nick Miller each added 2 points to round out the scoring for St. Ann.
St. Ann had their next game of the tournament October 21 when they took on Fairview Heights Holy Trinity. A close game throughout, St. Ann found themselves down by one at the end of the first quarter and at halftime. The halftime score was 16-17.
Both teams continued their scoring in the second half, but the third quarter saw St. Ann take the lead by two going into the fourth quarter. St. Ann could not hold the lead as Holy Trinity inched out a victory 35-31.
St. Ann was led by Nick Miller, who was the only double digit scorer for the Saints, with 11 points. Cole Malawy finished with 9 points. Terry Pelczynski scored 7 points for the Saints and Logan Eversgerd chipped in 4 points to round out the scoring for St. Ann.
St. Ann finished off the tournament as they took on Waltonville. The Saints led for most of the game, taking the lead early outscoring Waltonville 15-9 in the first quarter. Waltonville came back with a good second quarter, and were able to tie the game at halftime. Coming out of halftime, the Saints took the lead for good in the third quarter and led the rest of the way taking the game 46-35.
The Saints had three players in double figures, led by Pelczynski with 16. Miller and Malawy each added 11 points in the game. Logan Eversger added 6 points in the game. Braden Bauza added 2 points to end the scoring for St. Ann.
The boys team is back in action on November 2, at home against Ashley.
