The NCHS boys cross country team competed at the Class A State Final Meet this past Saturday, which was held at Detweiller Park in Peoria. The boys qualified for state after placing third in the sectional that was held at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on October 31.
The Hornets finished in 18th place out of 25 teams at the meet. The state championship was won by Tolono (Unity) with 30 points. Second place was won by Shelbyville with 124 points and third place was St. Joseph with 145 points in the race.
The Hornets finished with 443 points in the meet. The Hornets finished behind conference rival Pinckneyville, who finished in 16th place with 420 points.
Leading the way for the Hornets was sophomore Brandon Schnitker. Schnitker finshed in 47th place overall in the meet with a time of 16:21. The second finisher for Nashville was Caleb Zgonina in 63rd place with a time of 16:36. Jackson Pierce was third in 95th place with a time of 16:58 on the course. Fourth for the Hornets was Ray Bailey in 117th place crossing the line with a time of 17:16. Right behind Bailey was the last scorer for Nashville Ryan Kell with a time of 17:22 in 121st place.
Other runners for the Hornets were Landon Davis, who finished in 144th place with a time of 17:59 and Jacob Showmaker in 168th place with a time of 18:49.
This season marked the third straight year that the Hornets were able to advance to the Class A State Finals meet in cross country.
Last year the Hornets finished in 21st place at the State Finals meet, with their highest finisher being in 81st place.
Schnitker had the highest individual finish by a Nashville athlete since Kiefer Heiman in 2009
