February 24 Classic Photo: Private Fowler

The Classic Photo featured in our February 24 edition was of ayoung service woman with the surname Fowler.

“Susan Fowler, looks like it,” said Betz Nowakowski, who added that Fowler lived behind the old Blue Moon tavern in Ashley and went to Ashley High School.

Nowakowski said she was Susan’s neighbor and was friends with Elba, Susan’s younger sister.

Later The Nashville News received a contact number for Susan Fowler, now Suan Motoya.

“That probably came from your archives back when I graduated from Air Force Basic,” said Montoya, who had already been contacted by friends about the photo. She said that it would have been taken around January of 1975 and that she would have been referred to as an airman-basic, not as a private.

This photo was taken at the start of a 20-some year long career Montoya said, with her serving in the U.S.A.F. as both enlister personnel and an officer.

“It was great– it was the best thing that ever happened to me,” she said. “I wanted to travel and I got to go everywhere!”

Montoya is now retired and resides in San Antonio, Texas, near where the photo was taken and where the journey began, at Lackland Air Force Base.
