Heggemeiers Receive National Farmers’ Young Producers Award
Paul and Sarah Heggemeier, of Nashville, received the 2016 outstanding young producers award for National Farmers’ Upper Midwest dairy region at National Farmers national convention in East Peoria, on Jan. 26.
Raised on a dairy operation, Sarah is responsible for that portion of the Heggemeier farm, making her a fourth-generation dairy producer.
“You don’t have to talk to Sarah very long to know her 40 red Holsteins are her passion, and have been since she was a young girl,” said Gene Wharton, National Farmers field representative. “She was the first girl to take four years of agriculture FFA at Nashville Community High School, and the first girl to achieve State Farmer.”
On the 300-plus acre farm, Sarah’s husband, Paul, handles the cropland. In addition, they raise sheep. They belong to Trinity Lutheran Church, and host an annual field trip to their farm for its parochial school. They also serve on the Washington County Fair Committee, with Paul serving on the Board of Directors.
They have been proud members of National Farmers Organization since 1997. Sarah said she is also proud of her niece, who is following in her footsteps by showing one of the Heggemeiers’ calves at the fair this year.
