Lady Titans Earn Second In Lutheran Sports Association State Tournament

The TSJ/ILS Lady Titans earned second place in the Lutheran Sports Association State Tournament this past week that began Friday morning. The Lady Titans competed in four games in a span of three days, that featured two games on Saturday afternoon.

TSJ/ILS began the tournament against Lombard on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. A closely contested contest, the Lady Titans were able to come away with a 31-24 victory. The Lady Titans took the lead after the first quarter, and continued to build their lead slowly, throughout the game. TSJ/ILS were led in the game by Delaney Toensing with 16 points to lead all scorers. Cayla Krueger and Taylor Rapp each scored four points apiece in the win. Katie May added three points, followed by Kris May and Grace Foster with two points apiece.

The next game saw the Lady Titans face off against Edwardsville. Another close contest, saw TSJ/ILS come back from a first quarter defecit to defeat Edwardsville 33-30. After the first quarter, TSJ/ILS trailed 12-9 but they used a big second quarter to take a 19-16 lead at halftime. The Lady Titans extended their lead to five points going into the final quarter, and held on for a three point victory. Toensing again led TSJ/ILS with 11 points in the contest. Joining Toensing in double figures was Rapp with 10 points. Foster scored six points for the Lady Titans followed by Krueger with four points, and Megan Rennegarbe with two points.

The Lady Titans second game of the day on Saturday came against Mt. Prospect. In this game, TSJ/ILS overcame another slow start to defeat Mt. Prospect 34-30. The game didn't start out the way the Lady Titans had hoped, as they found themselves trailing 12-4 at the end of the first quarter. TSJ/ILS would come back with a vengence in the second, outscoring Mt. Prospect 13-4 to take a one point halftime lead. Mt. Prospect regained the lead in the third quarter, but could not hold on in the fourth as TSJ/ILS outscored Mt. Prospect 14-9 in the final stanza to come away with a 34-30 victory. Toensing scored 16 points to lead the Lady Titans in the contest, followed by Rapp with 14. Foster rounded out the scoring with four points.

With the win over Mt. Prospect, the Lady Titans earned themselves a spot in the championship game against Palatine on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Titans fell behind early, and could not muster another comeback as Palatine defeated TSJ/ILS 42-20. The Lady Titans fell behind 8-2 after the first quarter, and trailed by 16 at halftime. In the second half, Palatine was able to cruise to a 22 point victory. Toensing led the Lady Titans with 11 points, followed by Rapp with five points. Rennegarbe and Krueger had two points apiece in the loss.

Two members of the TSJ/ILS Lady Titans earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. Both Delaney Toensing and Taylor Rapp were given the honor. Toensing led TSJ/ILS in every game of the tournament, and scored 53 points over four games. Rapp finished with 33 points in the tournament.

The TSJ/ILS Lady Titans earned second place in the LSA State Tournament this past weekend defeating Lombard, Edwardsville, and Mt. Prospect before falling to Palatine in the championship game.
