Accident Claims Life Of Mt. Vernon Resident

The Washington County Coroner’s office was dispatched to the scene of a single vehicle crash at 9:07 a.m. on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 on Illinois State Route 15 approximately 3 miles east of Nashville. Joyce A. Shrum 75 of Mt. Vernon was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:19 a.m. by Washington County Deputy Coroner Brock Styninger.

Shrum was the restrained passenger of a Triumph TR8 sports car being driven by her husband John L. Shrum. It appears the Shrum’s were traveling west bound on Route 15 when they ran off the north side of the road, over corrected and then ran off the south side of the road where the vehicle flipped over landing upside down on its top. John Shrum was flown from the scene by Arch Helicopter to a St. Louis hospital.

Mrs. Shrum appears to have died from a fractured cervical due to blunt force trauma. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident. An autopsy will not be performed.

Agencies assisting at the scene were the Washington County Ambulance Service, Nashville Police and Fire Departments, Washington County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois State Police and the Washington County Coroner’s office.
