11th Annual 5K “Walk With The Dogs” Scheduled For June 4

In what has become a much anticipated day, the 11th Annual 5K “Walk With the Dogs” will be held on Saturday, June 4 at Memorial Park at 7:30 am.

It is much anticipated by so many in the community now as it is an emotional but inspiring morning each year to help raise awareness and funding of Pancreatic Cancer and also to pay tribute to those who fought this vicious disease.

Pancreatic Cancer has NO early detection methods and little-to-no treatment options! Although there are new advances made in the laboratories about it this past year and the 5 year survival rate has risen 1% over the last year (to 8%), it is still one of the few forms of cancer whose survival rate is in the single digits!! But the researchers are optimistic and that is why it is critical to raise money for research.

The event will reach a milestone this year….surpassing the quarter million Cumulative Lifetime Giving to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Last year the event raised $44,500 and had 418 participants in Nashville and 67 “Web Walkers” (those who wanted to participate but could not attend the event). Co-organizers Christi Thompson Merritt and Carolyn Detering are once again hoping to surpass those numbers this year!!! Merritt is amazed at how the Community comes out to support the efforts and says the force of “Purple Warriors” grows each year. She says “it makes my Purple Heart smile”.

She also continues to be impressed by the support of the community in Sponsorship and donations for the Silent Auction. And says “my mom would be blown away by what we have been able to achieve”.

The Foundation was formed in 2005 after Merritt’s mother and Detering’s sister Jeanenne Thompson lost her valiant fight against Pancreatic Cancer after 8 months.

Entry forms can be downloaded at the website and mailed in or online registration is available at or from Detering. The deadline to guarantee a shirt size is May 13.

You can continue to register up to the day of the Walk, but T-shirts may not be available nor sizes guaranteed after the deadline.

The entry fee is still $20 and that includes admission to the event, a T-shirt and a dog bandana.
