Matthew Bergmann, 15, of Swansea, grandson of Darlene Bergmann of Nashville, received a special award from High School District 201 at the school board meeting on June 20. His name was added to a plaque honoring students for Outstanding Achievers at District 201 Belleville.

Matthew obtained the rank of Eagle Scout on September 24, 2015 and his Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held on October 11, 2015. His Eagle Scout project was building bird feeders for the Wolf Branch Middle School trees and developing a unit that could be used by the science teachers at the school on feeding habits of local birds.

Matthew started scouting as a six year old Tiger Cub Scout and completed his Eagle Scout rank in 2015. He was the only one remaining of the original group of 16 Tiger Cub Scouts to continue and complete scouting requirements for Eagle Rank. He earned over 27 badges to complete requirements. He currently serves as Senior Patrol Leader for Boy Scout Troop 52 in Swansea.

Matthew attended Wolf Branch Elementary and Middle Schools and will be a junior at Belleville East High School where he has been on the honor roll. He is a member of the football and wrestling teams at Belleville East and plays trumpet in the school band. He also volunteers at the Swansea Food Pantry during the Scouting for Food Drive and other local community service projects. He is an active member of St. Teresa Catholic Church in Belleville. He is the son of Katherine Bergmann of Swansea.
