The fall sports season for Nashville High School came to an end this past weekend at the IHSA Class 1A State Finals, which were held at Detweiller Park in Peoria. For the first time since the 2010 season, Nashville had their entire girls cross country team competing. On the boys side, Nashville had just two runners advance from Sectionals as Brandon Schnitker and Caleb Zgonina advanced as individuals.
In the girls race, Nashville came away with 21st place as a team. The 21st place finish is the highest finish for Nashville since 2008-09, whcn they finished in 20th place. The Hornettes finished with 449 points. The State Championship went to St. Joseph Ogden. Tolono (Unity) finished second, and Liberty finished third. Nashville was led by Grace Maschhoff, who came across the line in 63rd place with a time of 19:42. Maschhoff was followed closely by Sabrina Kollbaum, who finished in 65th place with a time of 19:48. Brittnie Bartling was third across the line for Nashville, in 77th place with a time of 20:02. Jaylyn Bower finished in 83rd place with a time of 20:06. The fifth finisher for Nashville was Jadah Heidel, with a time of 22:13. Avery Meade finished with a time of 23:35, and Taylor Cook finished with a time of 25:28.
On the boys side, Elgin took home the State Championship in Class 1A, narrowly defeating Freeburg. Richmond finished fourth. The Hornets only had two runners in the race, and were led by Schnitker, who finished in 14th place overall. Schnitker crossed the line in 15:24. Zgonina finished the race with a time of 16:55, which was good for 135th place.
The boys and girls cross country teams capped off successful seasons. The girls finished the season, as conference champions, and regional champions. The Hornettes also took home a third place finish in the Sectional this season. The boys team finished the season with a third place finish at both conference and regionals.
