A traffic collision that occurred at approximately 11:57 p.m., on Friday, December 2, between a pickup truck and a semi on I-64 near the Nashville exit ended with the death of Jon Lair, 45, of Mt. Vernon.
Lair’s vehicle, a 2016 Toyota Tundra was traveling eastbound on Interstate 64 near mile post 51.5 when it exited the roadway to the left and crashed into a guard rail. The Toyota then came back onto Interstate 64 and crossed over both eastbound lanes of traffic, and side swiped a concrete bridge.
The vehicle came to rest in the center of the eastbound lanes. An eastbound 2015 Freightliner semi truck in five axle combination driven by Santiago A. Reyes, 62, of Yelm, Wash., struck the driver’s side of the stopped Toyota.
Reyes stated he saw the Toyota stopped in the eastbound lanes of traffic too late. The Freightliner was unable to stop in time in order to avoid a collision.
The Washington County Coroner’s Office pronounced the driver of the Toyota deceased on scene. The roadway was closed for nearly six hours for crash investigation and scene clean up.
The crash is under investigation by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. There are no charges pending at this time.
