The Veterans of Foreign Wars Voice of Democracy Essay Contest was recently conducted at Okawville High School under the direction of Dana Donovan and Jackie Smith. All juniors participated in the contest whose topic this year was My Responsibility to America. The first place winner was Audrey Jansen, daughter of Paul and Tanya Jansen. Responsibilities described in her essay included, "respect to those who fought to make this country free…respect federal, state, and local laws…taking care of yourself and not expecting everything to be done for you…knowing the issues that affect your community and even the country…defend your country if the need arises…respect everyone's belief and opinions even if you don't agree with them." Tiffany Thompson, daughter of Rodney and Beth Thompson, was the second place winner. Rebekah Segelhorst, daughter of Melanie and the late Vernon Segelhorst, was the third place winner. Amity Akins, daughter of Michael and Stephanie Greaney, was the fourth place winner. Caryssa Kennelly, daughter of Tawn Crothers, was the fifth place winner.
