Lawrence M. Schaff

Lawrence M. Schaff, 80, of Batavia, IL, formerly of Nashville, IL and Lewistown, MT, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at his home. Larry was born on January 8, 1936 in Grant County, ND, the son of Adam and Veronica (Emter) Schaff.

He was united in marriage on April 15, 1961 in Great Falls, MT to Sally Glen.

Larry was the youngest child of twelve. He was rasied by strict German immigrant parents, therefore he learned to be a survivor. His mother died when he was six years of age, and is father dying when Larry was 16 years of age. He worked on the family farm, and on his sister, Margaret's farm as well.

He graduated from high school in Billings, MT in 1955, while living with his eldest brother, Andrew. While growing up in North Dakota and Montana, Larry was very competitive boxer at the Bantomweight. Larry winning the Golden Glove Championship in 1954. After graduation from Carroll College with a Bachelor's in Business in Helena, MT, he was employed by US Gypsum Company where he worked for 38 years. In 1972 he was transferred to the US Gypsum plant in Southern Illinois, and moved his family to Nashville, IL. They resided in Nashville, IL for 42 years, while working as a Human Resources Manager, and an office manager.

Larry was very devoted to the Catholic Church, serving on The Parish Council and was a 4th Degree in The Knights of Columbus. He was also very active in The Lion's Club, serving as President in 1997.

His other hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, playing and coaching sports, golfing, and playing cards.

Larry is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sally Schaff of Batavia, IL; four sons, Nicholas Schaff of Clarendon Hills, IL, Anthony “Tony” (Stephanie) Schaff of Carmel, IN, Christopher “Chris” (Tami) Schaff of Morton, IL, and Thomas “Tom” (Anne) Schaff of Batavia, IL; two daughters, Margaret “Margie” Schaff (Dirk Martin) of Boulder, CO and Mary (Gregory) Siegel of Arvada, CO; daughter-in-law, Christine Schaff of Clarendon Hills, IL; three brothers, Matthew Schaff of Glen Ullin, ND, Michael (Ellen) Schaff of San Diego, CA, and Dominic (Cyndi) Schaff of Bismark, ND; two sisters, Florentine Malsbury of Billings, MT, and Eve Francisco of Duluth, MN; two brothers-in-law, Colonel G.W.B. (Peggy) Glen, retired of Roy, UT, and John (Coreen) Glen of Billings, MT; fourteen grandchildren, Nicole and Olivia Schaff of Clarendon Hills, IL; T.J., Mackenzie, and Joshua Schaff of Carmel, IN; Lauren, Isaac, Adam, and Luke Schaff of Morton, I; Calvin, Andrew, and Tommy Schaff of Batavia, IL; Allison and Will Siegel of Arvada, CO.

Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Andrew and Leo Schaff; four sisters, Ann Hellman, Betty Hopfauf, Margaret Fitterer, and Rose Francisco.

A visitation was held from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Friday, December 9, 2016 at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 S. Batavia Avenue, Batavia, IL. Funeral services began with prayers at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at Moss Family Funeral Home, before proceeding to celebrate Mass at 10:30 AM at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2300 West Main Street, Batavia, IL. Interment followed at Resurrection Cemetery in Geneva, IL.
