Jr. Hornets Defeat Sparta And Pinckneyville

The Nashville Middle School eighth grade Jr. Hornets boys basketball team picked up two wins this week as they defeated Sparta and Pinckneyville. The seventh grade Jr. Hornets also defeated Pinckneyville and Sparta pushing their record to 14-1

In the eighth grade game, the Jr. Hornets used a big third quarter on their way to a 62-36 win over Sparta. The Jr. Hornets led the entire game, but put the game away for good in the third quarter, as they outscored Sparta 23-8. Going into the third quarter, the Jr. Hornets held a 27-17 lead, but they did not let off the gas, as they put away any thoughts of a comeback. In the fourth, Nashville cruised to an easy victory.

Jaxon Goforth led Nashville with 16 points in the game. Camden Ritzel added eleven points, while Gavin Baldwin scored ten points. Preston Dagner scored nine points in the win, followed by Cole Malawy with five points. Bryce Donato and Ian Blazier each finished with four points apiece. Michael Combs finished with two points, and Kolten Gajewski scored one point to round out the scoring.

The eighth grade Jr. Hornets were back in action on December 15 as they defeated Pinckneyville at home 36-16. The Jr. Hornets shut out Pinckneyville in the first as they raced off to a 9-0 lead. Pinckneyville made a run in the second but were only able to get within six before halftime. In the third quarter, the Jr. Hornets pulled away and put the game away as they outscored Pinckneyville 12-2. In the fourth, Nashville was able to close out the 20 point victory.

Goforth and Baldwin led Nashville with eight points apiece in the game. Dagner and Donato each added six points, followed by Ritzel with five points. Malawy scored three points in the win.

The seventh grade Jr. Hornets also defeated Sparta on December 13. Nashville jumped out to a big lead in the first, and pulled away late to win 41-18. Combs led Nashville with 13 points in the win. Gajewski added eight points, while Aaron Brink and Nolan Heggemeier each scored six points. Blazier, Saxton Hoepker, Ben Reid, and Hayden Robinson each scored two points for the Jr. Hornets.

The seventh grade team notched their fourteenth win of the season with a 43-16 victory over Pinckneyville. Leading the way for Nashville was Blazier with 10 points. Combs scored eight points, while Heggemeier chipped in six points. Gajewski and Robinson each scored four points in the win, followed by Reid with three points. Brink, Conor Gladson, Lucas Knepp and Radyn Schwartzkopf each had two points in the contest.
