The Nashville Middle School Jr. Hornettes girls basketball team finished out the regular season with a 3-1 record as they defeated Albers, Trico, and Chester, but fell to Salem in a closely contested contest. The Varsity Jr. Hornettes finished the season with an 18-5 record, and will play Wayne City in the Fairfield Regional at 6 p.m. on Wednesday January 11. The JV Jr. Hornettes finished with a record of 20-5
The Jr. Hornettes began 2017 with a 40-29 victory over Albers on January 4. The Jr. Hornettes trailed 6-5 after the end of the first quarter, but outscored Albers 12-3 in the second to take a eight point lead into halftime. After the break, Nashville was able to put the game away as they outscored Albers 17-4 in the third quarter. In the fourth, Albers made a run, but the Jr. Hornettes were able to hold on for a 40-29 victory.
Alyssa Cole led Nashville with 12 points in the win. Reagan Burke joined Cole in double figures with 11 points for the Jr. Hornettes. Whitley Hunter added eight points, while Brianna Schorfheide, Annie Ahlers, Kiley Heidel, and Ashlyn Frazier each scored two points. Sami Edwards rounded out the scoring with one point.
The JV team defeated Albers 33-13.
In their next game, the Jr. Hornettes traveled to take on Trico. A close game in the first half, Nashville used a big third quarter to pull out the win. Trico came out quick out of the gate, as they led Nashville 11-6 after the first quarter. Nashville made a run in the second quarter, as they outscored Trico 11-4 to take a 17-15 lead into halftime. After half, the Jr. Hornettes came out on fire and built a 10 point lead going into the final stanza. In the fourth, Nashville put the game away with a 35-24 win.
Schorfheide led Nashville with 12 points in the game, followed by Burke with 10 points. Cole added six points, followed by Heidel with four points. Hunter scored two points in the win, and Edwards finished with one point.
The JV team defeated Trico 29-5.
The Jr. Hornettes suffered a close loss to Salem 38-34 on January 7. The Jr. Hornettes controlled the action in the first half, as they held a 10-4 lead after the first quarter, and an 18-11 lead at halftime. In the second half, Salem made a run, and cut the Jr. Hornettes lead to just one point goint into the final quarter. In the fourth, Salem was able to complete the comeback, and came away with a four point victory.
Cole led Nashville with 22 points in the loss, followed by Burke with 8. Hunter and Frazier both scored two points in the contest.
The Jr. Hornettes finished up the regular season with a 46-20 win over Chester on January 10. Nashville got going early, as they held a 13-6 lead over Chester after one quarter of action. The Jr. Hornettes defense stifled Chester in the second quarter, as they outscored Chester 15-3 in the quarter to take a commanding 28-9 lead into halftime. After half, the Jr. Hornettes were able to cruise to an easy win as they head into regionals.
The Jr. Hornettes were led by Schorfheide and Cole who each finished with 14 points apiece. Hunter added 10 points, followed by Edwards with four points. Burke, and Janisha Bailey each finished with two points.
