Five seniors from Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School in Centralia have been named as 2016-2017 Illinois State Scholars. Receiving the honor are seniors Ethan Boester, Joshua Duensing, Anna Krenz, Ashley Schwarzlose and Megan Schwarzlose. This is the second year in a row that Christ Our Rock has had five students so honored from among the senior class.

“We are very proud of our entire student body and rejoice with our five Illinois State Scholars.  Last year the school broke its record with five students and we are excited that we have done it for the second year in a row.” said Don Duensing, Principal and Executive Director for the school. “It is a testament to our students and teaching staff that five of our twenty-four seniors are Illinois State Scholars.”

The prestigious award, given annually by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), recognized more than 18,800 high school students from across the state as this year’s State Scholars. Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top ten percent of high school seniors from 671 different high schools across the state.

Students ranking in the top 10 percent of graduating high school seniors are eligible for honors.  Selection is based on SAT, ACT and/or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores and/or students’ individual class rank at the end of the junior year of high school.

More than a half million Illinois State Scholars have been recognized by ISAC since the program’s inception in 1958. The Commission provides educational funding via numerous programs such as the Monetary Award Program (MAP), the Illinois Veteran Grant Program and various other grant, scholarship, loan repayment and prepaid tuition programs. Students and families have free access to a wealth of financial aid and college planning information at ISAC’s family of websites available at
