Once again, the Nashville Jr. Hornettes girls basketball team are Regional Champions. The Nashville Middle School Jr. Hornettes began postseason play this past week in the Fairfield Regional. The Jr. Hornettes first matchups was up against Wayne City, before the Jr. Hornettes faced off against the host school Fairfield on Monday January 16.
In the first game of the regional, the Jr. Hornettes easily defeated Wayne City 43-10. Nashville got off to a fast start as they outscored Wayne City 14-1 in the first quarter, By halftime, the Jr. Hornettes lead had ballooned to 28-4. After halftime, the Jr. Hornettes were able to cruise to a 43-10 victory to clinch a spot in the regional championship game.
The Jr. Hornettes were led in the game by Whitley Hunter, who finished with 24 points in the win. Hunter was joined in double figures by Alyssa Cole with 10 points in the win. Brianna Schorfheide scored six points, followed by Reagen Burke with two points. Annie Ahlers rounded out the scoring with one point.
The Jr. Hornettes captured the Regional Championship with a 40-17 over the host school Fairfield.
The Jr. Hornettes got out of the gate quick, as they outscored Fairfield 14-5 in the first quarter. Nashville kept the pressure on Fairfield in the second quarter, as the Jr. Hornettes held Fairfield scoreless and took a commanding 23-5 lead into the break.
After halftime, the Jr. Hornettes continued to build their lead and led 33-12 with just one quarter to play. In the fourth, the Jr. Hornettes were able to cruise to an easy 40-17 victory and clinched a spot in the State Tournament.
The Jr. Hornettes were led in the game Schorfheide with 16 points. Hunter added 10 points, followed by Burke and Cole with five points apiece. Ashlyn Frazier and Sami Edwards each scored two points in the win.
The Jr. Hornettes record is 20-5 as they head into the state tournament. Nashville will play Joseph Arthur (O’Fallon) on Friday January 20 at 3:30 p.m. The State Tournament will take place at Rend Lake.
