Jr. Hornettes To Play For State Championship

The Jr. Hornettes are going to try and capture the first State Championship in school history this Friday when they take on Vienna at Rend Lake College at 7:30. The Jr. Hornettes advanced to the State Championship game with wins over Jonesboro and Joseph Arthur in the first two rounds of the SIJHSAA Class M State Tournament. The Jr. Hornettes record now stands at 22-5.

The Jr. Hornettes got the State Tournament off to a great start with a 41-25 win over Joseph Arthur (O’Fallon). The Jr. Hornettes got off to a fast start as they outscored Joseph Arthur 8-2 in the first quarter. The Jr. Hornettes continued to build their lead in the second quarter and held a 19-8 lead at halftime. After halftime, Joseph Arthur could not make a comeback, as the Jr. Hornettes took the victory.

Alyssa Cole led Nashville with 16 points, followed by Whitley Hunter with 12 points. Brianna Schorfheide scored six points in the win while Reagen Burke finished with four points. Kiley Heidel scored one point for Nashville.

The Jr. Hornettes were back in action on Monday January 23 as they took on Jonesboro in the second round of the SIJHSAA Class M State Tournament. A close game throughout, the Jr. Hornettes were able to advance to the State Championship game with a 36-34 win over Jonesboro.

The Jr. Hornettes led throughout the game, and held a slim 12-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, in the second quarter, the Jr. Hornettes were able to gain a little more breathing room as they held a 20-14 lead at halftime. After the break, the Jr. Hornettes were able to maintain their lead and kept a six point lead going into the final quarter of play. In the fourth, Jonesboro was able to make a run, but the Jr. Hornettes were able to hold on for the two point victory.

Burke led Nashville with 16 points and was joined in double figures by Hunter, who scored 12 points in the win. Ashlyn Frazier added four points, and Edwards and Cole rounded out the scoring with 2 points apiece.

The Jr. Hornettes will play Vienna in the State Championship Game Friday January 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Rend Lake College.
