On Thursday, January 26, the TSJ-ILS Titans lost to St. Ann’s 47-46 in the regional semi-finals. St. Ann’s came out shooting extremely well in the first half and led 23-16. The Titans didn’t help themselves with a very lackadaisical and defensive effort.
St. Ann’s built their lead to 15 points midway through the 3rd quarter. During a Titan time-out, at that time the coaches said things don’t look good, it was a now or never situation and their intensity on defense had to be jacked up. They came out of time-out with a half-court diamond and one defense and went after the Saints.
The kids started moving their feet, hands-up, diving on the floor for loose balls and went on a roll. The last one and a half quarters the Titans had the packed-house crowd on their feet, shouting and clapping their hands. The players showed a lot of no quit attitude. Led by the overall team defensive effort and 3, three point baskets by Ashton McGranahan and 9, 4th quarter points by Mason Meyer, many forced turnovers the Titans took the lead at 46-44.
The almost great comeback ended when a Saints player hit a 3-pointer with just a few seconds left on the clock for a Saints 47-46 victory. Fans of both teams will forever remember the crowd atmosphere, cheering their teams on and the great effort by both teams.
The Titans coaches were very pleased with the comeback effort and grit to get back into the game. The scoring for the Titans was: Mason Meyer 16, Caleb Unverfehrt 12, Ashton McGranahan 9, Boomer Harris 6 and Tyler Schill 3. Rebound leaders: Meyer 8, Harris 7 and Schill 6.
