The Titans started their Jr High Lutheran only schedule with a victory over Belleville Zion on Valentine’s Day, February 14th with a score of 34-23. This was a warm-up game for the Peoria tourney at Christ Lutheran School on Feb 17, 18 and 19. This was a 24 team tournament that the Titans were fairly successful finishing in eighth place.
This was the Titan’s first appearance at this tournament. The games were very competitive and it was a well organized and run three day event.
Boomer Harris competed in the free-throw shooting contest with 23 other players, one from each school. In the 24 man three point shooting contest Ashton McGranahan finished with a tie for 3rd place.
After playing four games in a Peoria Tournament over the weekend, the Lutheran Sports Association scheduled a state play in game for Monday, February 20. After compiling an 11-1 record against Lutheran Schools. The coaches, players and their fans were sure they would receive an automatic bid to the Lutheran Sports Association State Tournament in Chicago the first weekend in March.
After the four games in three days the Titans came out lethargic against St. John’s Chester team and tailed 8-0 into the first quarter. After two time-outs and some strong talk from the coaches the Titans turned up the intensity and tied the game at 16 on a driving lay-up out of their four corner offense by Tyler Schill. After three quarters the game was tied at 23.
Chester scored the first four points of the final quarter. At that point the Titans basically played a match up zone with Mason Meyer doing a great defensive effort on Chester’s best player. The Titans out scored their opponent 13-0 over the last four minutes of the game. Caleb Unverfehrt hit a three pointer from the top of the key and Mason Meyer had a stick back to give the Titans the lead 28-27. Over the last two minutes the Titans stayed in their spread offense with Boomer Harris making a driving basket and Mason Meyer and Caleb Unverfehrt making two free throws to give the Titans the victory 36-27. Tyler Schill probably had his best all-around game of the year with nine points an five rebounds. Ashton McGranahan did not score but played good defense and made several good post feeds to enable post scores. Finishing out the scoring were Mason Meyer 10, Caleb Unverfehrt 9 and Boomer Harris 8.
Great team effort and the Titans are going to Lutheran State in Chicago. Playing a tournament in Springfield the last weekend in February- warm up for state.
