4-H Pistol Club Welcomes New Members

Washington County 4-H has added a Pistol Club to their Shooting Sports program for the 2017 season.  To participate in the Pistol Shooting Sports Club, youth must be age 12 or older.  Cost will be approximately $13 per child, per session.  This will cover range feeds, targets and ammo. The group will meet at the Highland Range from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Families will be responsible for transportation to and from the range, but all equipment will be provided for participation.

4-H shooting sports participants will learn safe and responsible use of equipment, sound decision making, self- discipline and concentration, members will also be learn sportsmanship and ethical behavior. Those wishing to participate in either group should call the Washington County Extension Office at 618-327-8881 to register in advance.

Four Seasons Gardening Program Offers Spring Series

The spring series of University of Illinois Extension’s Four Seasons Gardening program, which focuses on environmental stewardship, home gardening, and backyard food production, gets underway this month. The first session of the series is titled, Growing Vegetables for Beginners. The program is offered twice – on April 18 at 1:30 p.m. and again on April 20 at 6:30 p.m.

Produce always taste better when you are enjoying the fruits of your labor.  Join Jennifer Fishburn, Horticulture Educator, as she shares tips for successfully growing vegetables in a small space. This webinar may be viewed from home by pre-registering at go.illinois.edu/4seasons_webinars. Recorded videos of these sessions can be viewed following the program at go.illinois.edu/fourseasonsrecordings.

Other topics in the spring series include Beyond Hosta – Perennials for the Shade set for May 2 and 4, and Bountiful Backyards: Berries, Brambles and Beyond set for May 16 and 18.
