Girls And Boys Track Win Chester Relays

Landon Davis, Brittnie Bartling and Jaylyn Bower braved heavy rain to run the 3200m race on March 30. The meet was canceled after the race was finished.

The NCHS track teams continued their hot start to the season, as both the Hornets and Hornettes each took home first place at the Chester Relays on March 27. The NCHS track team’s meet on March 29, was canceled after a few events due to heavy rain.
The Hornettes outlasted five other teams to finish on top. Nashville finished with 114 points, 12 points ahead of second place Chester, Murphysboro finished third, followed by New Athens, Red Bud, and Columbia. The Hornettes had five first place finishes in the meet. The field event scores were combined for one total between two athletes. In the shot put, Carlie Hoffman, and Janie Holle took home first place. Sydney Schnitker and Annabelle Epplin each finished first in the triple jump. Morgan Fox and Kylie Kozuszek took first place in the pole vault. In the running events, Taylor Cook, Kylie Kozuszek, Sabrina Kollbaum and Grace Maschhoff each finished first in the 3200m relay, and the team of Jaylyn Bower, Raqui Elliott, Rachael Kell, and Maschhoff finished first in the distance medley.
The boys team finished with 96 points, 30 points ahead of second place Columbia. Chester finished third, followed by Red Bud and New Athens. Again the field event scores were combined so two athletes would have one total score. In the shot put, Arturo Garcia, and Derek Kirgan took home first place. In the triple jump Mason Niedbalski and Daymeon Baugh grabbed first place. The hurdles relay race was won by Ethan Reid, Gavyn Lietz, Jackson Aulds, and Joseph Karmeier. In the sprint medley, Alec Johns, Niedbalski, Tabor Kozuszek and Derryn Holmes crossed the line first. The 3200m relay was won by Caleb Zgonina, Gavin Love, Jace Matecki, and Brandon Schnitker. In the 400m throwers relay, Garcia, Kirgan, Karmeier, and Issac Sexe took home first place. In the distance relay, Landon Davis, Love, Zgonina, and Schnitker took home first place, while Reid, Tabor Kozuszek, Schnitker and Holmes finished first in the 1600m relay.
