Okawville Man, Schwankhaus, Killed In Wreck Monday Morning

A single vehicle accident early Monday morning has left one man, Justin Schwankhaus, 21, of Okawville, dead.

At 3:13 a.m. on Monday, May 29, the office of the Washington County Coroner was dispatched to the scene of a single car accident on Illinois State Route 160 approximately 3 miles west of Addieville.

Schwankhaus was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at 3:30 a.m. by Washington County Coroner Mark Styninger.

Schwankhaus was operating a vehicle west bound on Route 160 when it left the north side of the road, striking a culvert.

The vehicle then flipped three times, ejecting Schwankhaus.  He was not wearing a seat belt.

Cause of death appears to be head and chest injuries due to blunt force trauma.

Other agencies on the scene were the Okawville Fire and Police Departments, Washington County Ambulance Service, Illinois State Police and the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.

No autopsy is planned, but toxicology samples were obtained by Coroner Styninger and submitted for testing.

The crash continues to be investigated by the Illinois State Police and the Washington County Coroner’s office.
