By Alex Johannes

The West Washington County District #10 Board of Education met on the evening of September 28, for their budget hearing and regular monthly meeting.

Budget Hearing

The Board of Education was presented with the budget plans for the 2017-2018 school year by Superintendent Scott Fuhrhop.

Fuhrhop stated that if the school receives their state aid money as promised, there will be a chance of a balanced budget in the education fund.

Regular Meeting

The board approved the budget plans for the 2017-2018 school year, as they were presented at the Budget Hearing prior to the regular meeting.

As a resolution to the budget, the board decided to begin making payments on the issue of approximately $7,500,000 General Obligation Refunding School Bonds, Series 2017, for the purpose of refunding certain outstanding bonds of the District, providing for the levy of a direct annual tax sufficient to pay the principal and interest on said bonds, authorizing the execution of an escrow agreement in connection with said refunding, and authorizing the sale of said bonds to Stifel, Nicolaus and Company, Incorporated.

In association to this decision, the board adopted the disclosure compliance policy of Community Unit School District #10, Washington County, Illinois.

The board approved the Okawville FFA Chapter to attend overnight trips during the 2017-2018 school year.

In the Principal’s Report, Grade School Principal Leon Spinka reported that attendance has increased from the beginning of last year’s school year.

On the grade school side, the attendance rate has increased to 97.6% from last year’s 97.4%.

On the junior high/high school side, the attendance rate has increased to 97.4% from last year’s 96.5%.

Spinka stated that he believes that the student attendance will continue to grow over the next few years.

As a result of the closed session of the meeting, the board of education accepted the resignation of Taylor Koeller as the fifth and sixth grade basketball coach and hired Jackie Smith as the new fifth and sixth grade basketball coach.

The board also hired Courtney Lintker as the new JV high school girls’ basketball coach for this year.
