Hornettes Win Regional, Hornets Bring Home Second

The girls cross country team won the IHSA Class 1A Carterville Regional on Saturday October 21, and will run in the Benton Sectional on October 28. The NCHS boys and girls cross country teams began the postseason this past week as they competed in the IHSA Class 1A Carterville Regional. The girls team topped the field as they won their second consecutive Regional Championship and advanced to the Benton Sectional. The boys team also advanced to the Benton Sectional as they finished second in the Regional.

The girls team took home the Regional Championship for the second consecutive year, as they finished with 51 points, 11 points ahead of second place Pinckneyville. The top seven teams advanced out of the Regional. Joining Nashville and Pinckneyville in advancing was DuQuoin, Chester, Carterville, Massac County, and Marissa.

The Hornettes were led by Jaylyn Bower, who finished third overall with a time of 20:14.1. Sabrina Kollbaum finished tenth overall with a time of 21:17.1, followed closely by Brittnie Bartling in 11th  place with a time of 21:19.2 Havalen Pierce finished in 15th place with a time of 21:33.3, while Destyn Hausner-Mills finished in 20th place with a time of 21:56. All of the Nashville runners finished in the top 30 as Grace Maschhoff came across in 26th place with a time of 22:34.4, and Kiley Heidel came across 29th overall with a time of 22:48.

The boys team took home second place as they finished one point behind Steeleville. Steeleville finished with 66 points, followed by Nashville with 67. Pinckneyville finished a distant third, followed by Red Bud, DuQuoin, Carterville, and Vienna, all of which advanced to Sectionals.

Brandon Schnitker led the way for Nashville with a third place finish. Schnitker finished with a time of 16:38.3. Caleb Zgonina was the next Nashville runner across the line in eighth place with a time of 17:27.3. Zgonina was followed closely by Gavin Love who finished in ninth place with a time of 17:30.9. Landon Davis finished in 14th place with a time of 17:51.9. Evan Anderson was the fifth runner across the line for Nashville in 33rd place with a time of 18:47.8. Nicholas Orr finished with a time of 20:14.2 and Derek Baugh finished with a time of 20:27.6.
