The Jr. Hornets eighth grade team won two of three this past week as they defeated Rome and Pinckneyville, but fell to Sparta. The Jr. Hornets are 11-5 on the season.
On December 11 the Jr. Hornets traveled to take on Rome. The Jr. Hornets got the lead early and held on for a 40-36 victory.
Nashville started out strong as they took a 15-8 lead after the first quarter of play. In the second, Rome closed the gap, and cut the deficit to one point at the half with the Jr. Hornets leading 23-22.
In the third quarter, the Jr. Hornets gained more breathing room as they outscored Rome 10-7 to take a 33-29 lead into the final stanza. In the fourth, Rome could not close the gap, as the Jr. Hornets held on for the four point win.
Kolten Gajewski led the Jr. Hornets with 12 points in the win. Michael Combs was also in double figures with 10 points, followed by Nolan Heggemeier with eight. Ian Blazier and Hayden Robinson each added four points, while Aaron Brink scored two points.
In the seventh grade game, the Jr. Hornets defeated Rome 38-10. Rylan Hammer led Nashville with 15 points, followed by Trey Reinburg with nine. Aidan Heiman and Quintin Loquasto each had four points, while Bennett Briles, Carson Cook, and JT Malawy each had two points.
The Jr. Hornets were back in action on December 12 as they hosted Sparta. Nashville got off to a slow start, and could not recover as Sparta won 43-27.
The Jr. Hornets were shut out in the first, as Sparta outscored Nashville 16-0 in the early going. Sparta extended their lead in the second, and led 29-10 at halftime.
In the second half, Nashville could not recover from the first quarter, and could not make a comeback as Sparta won the game 43-27.
Blazier led the way with six points, followed by Combs with five points. Briles, Hammer and Lucas Knepp each finished with four points, while Robinson and Heggemeier each finished with two points.
In the seventh grade game, the Jr. Hornets took the 49-12 win. Nashville was led by Briles with 18 points. Hammer added seven points followed by Cook and Heiman with five points apiece. Loquasto and Reinburg each finished with four points followed by Kaden Gajewski, Blaine Emrick, and Austin Kirsch who all finished with two points.
The Jr. Hornets got back on the winning track with a 43-26 win over Pinckneyville on December 14. The Jr. Hornets took the lead early, and steadily built their lead throughout the game to take the win.
Nashville led 10-7 at the end of the first, and extended the lead to 19-13 at the break. In the third, the Jr. Hornets extended their lead to 25-19 to go into the fourth with a six point lead. In the fourth, the Jr. Hornets put the game away as they outscored Pinckneyville 18-7 to get the win.
Kolten Gajewski led Nashville with 12 points, followed by Heggemeier with 11 points. Combs and Blazier each added six points, while Robinson scored four points. Radyn Schwartzkopf and Brink each scored two points to round out the scoring.
In the seventh grade game, the Jr. Hornets defeated Pinckneyville 40-35. Hammer led Nashville with 16 points, followed by Reinburg with 13 points. Briles scored six points in the win while Loquasto scored four points. Kaden Gajewski scored one point.
