Faith Perspectives – January 3, 2018
By Pastor Matt Craft,
Nashville Assembly of God
First let me say thank you to Nashville. My wife and I moved here in August and everyone, from our church family to the community has been nice, friendly, and welcoming.
Thank you for making our transition much easier.
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, the children are back in school and everyone is getting back to their normal routines.
The New Year is in front of us like a blank page. Many of us will make resolutions, goals to change for the better, which is a good thing.
We want to eat less, eat right, quit smoking, manage our time and money better, the list goes on and on. But probably the resolution most often made, is to lost weight and to get in better physical health. I have a friend who owns a couple of gyms and he told me, at the first of every year, memberships at his gyms skyrocket. That usually lasts for a short time.
In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he tells Timothy that physical training is of some value but godliness has value for all things, in this present life an the life to come. What is godliness, or training in godliness?
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount we find the foundational scripture to Christian living. Matthew chapter 6 verse 33 reads “ But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” What does this mean?
Seek first. First means above all else. We should seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness above all else.
A king is the ruler of his kingdom, if you are part of his kingdom, you are under his rule. We should seek His kingdom, His rule in our lives. Does God rule your life, above all else?
His righteousness, means to obey the commands of Jesus, remain separated from the world system( that operates against scripture), and show the love of Jesus to everyone.
Do you see His righteousness above all else?
Physical training is of some value, and it is good to be in good shape. If that is one of your resolutions, I wish you well; I hope you accomplish your goal.
I also urge you to train in godliness, something that is of value now and the life to come. Seek His kingdom and His righteousness, above all else.
Happy New Year.
