Stanowski Joins 1000 Point Club

NCHS Hornettes senior Karly Stanowski became the 13th player in NCHS girls basketball history to reach 1000 career points during the Hornettes win against DuQuoin on January 4. Stanowski came into the 2017-18 season needing just 222 points to reach the milestone. Stanowski needed just four points going into the game against DuQuoin in order to reach the milestone.  1000 points is one of three milestones that Stanowski could reach this season. Stanowski is also closing in on the career rebounds, and career made free throw records for NCHS girls basketball.
This season, Stanowski stated that she knew she was close, but wasn’t sure how close until the Mascoutah Tournament came around. “During the Mascoutah Tournament a ref actually came up to me and mentioned it to me and I didn’t know I was actually that close. I knew I was in the area but I wasn’t really sure.
After scoring three points in the first quarter of the Hornettes contest, Stanowski need just one point to get 1000 points as the second quarter began. After Paige Kasten hit a three for the Hornettes first points for the quarter for Nashville. On the Hornettes next trip down the floor, Stanowski would get fouled and again head to the free throw line. Stanowski made the first of two free throws to reach the milestone.
After the game, when asked if she was nervous, Stanowski talked about heading the the line with a chance at 1000 points in the first quarter. “Whenever I went up for my first two free throws, I knew if I made both of them I had it. I make the first one, Rachael (Kell) looks at me an giggles, and I end up missing the second one. I come back down get fouled again, make my first one so it wasn’t too bad.”
Stanowski then gave credit to her teammates and coaches. “ It wouldn’t be possible without the girls, because they are the ones that feed it in to me, and bring it up the floor and deal with all that. It’s a really big accomplishment and it was one of my goals since my Freshmen year since I got to start then. Coach Harre helped me out letting me start as a Freshmen, Coach Althoff, and then my dad coaching me at home all the time, so it was overall a good accomplishment.“
The Hornettes are 14-4 on the season with a 6-0 record in conference play this season.
