Jr. Hornettes Headed To State Championship

The Nashville Jr. Hornettes will play for the SIJHSAA Class M State Championship. The Jr. Hornettes defeated Goreville 44-11 in the Quarterfinals, and defeated Eldorado 41-18 in the Semifinals. The Jr. Hornettes have a record of 23-4 and will play Pontiac in the State Championship on Friday January 26 at 7:30 p.m. The game will be played at Rend Lake College.
The Jr. Hornettes started the State Tournament with a dominating 44-11 win over Goreville. Nashville jumped out to an 8-2 lead after the first quarter of play, and continued to pour it on from there. The Jr. Hornettes led 14-4 at halftime, and 27-10 at the end of three. Nashville outscored Goreville 17-1 in the final quarter to win the game 44-11 and move into the Semifinals.
Alyssa Cole and Baylie Newman each had 12 points to lead the way in the win. Daci Finke and Daphne Kollbaum finished with seven points apiece. Jordan Donato, Hope Liszewski, and Emma Eberhart each had two points for Nashville.
The Jr. Hornettes again dominated the action in their second state tournament game as they defeated Eldorado 41-18 to advance to the State Championship game.
Nashville jumped out to a 10-4 lead early, and held a 16-8 lead at the break. In the third, the Jr. Hornettes put the game away fro good as they outscored Eldorado 17-2 to take a commanding 33-10 lead into the fourth. Eldorado was even with Nashville in the fourth, but could not make a comeback as Nashville cruised to a 41-18 win.
Cole led the Jr. Hornettes with 19 points, followed by Kollbaum with 7. Newman added six points, while Paszkiewicz finished with four points. Liszewski scored three points, in the win, and Donato rounded out the scoring with two points.
The Jr. Hornettes will now face Pontiac in the State Championship. Pontiac defeated Vienna 42-24 in the quarterfinals, and defeated Shiloh 27-20 in the Semi-Finals. It is the second straight season that the Jr. Hornettes will play for the State Championship. The Jr. Hornettes fell to Vienna 51-42 in last year’s State Championship.
