Sea and Sun In The Yellow Universe” By He Bai

This week’s NCHS Student gallery features this glazed ceramic bowl titled “Sea and Sun in the Yellow Universe” by He Bai. He, a senior, is an exchange student at NCHS from China. She is living with the Ralls family of New Minden for the year.
This item was made for Art I class. Students were introduced to various hand-building techniques in ceramics. Students had to use at least three different construction techniques to make a ceramic vessel. Ceramics were fired in our pottery kiln and then painted with ceramic glaze. To make the ceramic glaze permanent, the ceramics went back into the kiln for a second firing.
“I used the newly learned coil technique to create an artwork which has a stable form, but creates a dynamic feeling through the patterns in the glaze,” stated He. “I applied a reactive glaze to my artwork, in which the mineral bubbles pop when being heated.“
“This was my first time working with ceramics since kindergarten,” He wrote, “but I have always liked creating things.”
