Jr. Hornets And Jr. Hornettes Win Regional Titles

The NMS boys and girls track teams came away with Regional Championships at the SIJHSAA Class S Region 5 Regional Meet held at NCHS on April 28.

The Nashville Middle School Jr. Hornets and Jr. Hornettes both picked up victories in the SIJHSAA Class S Regional. The Regionals were held at NCHS on Saturday April 28. The Jr. Hornets and Jr. Hornettes finished out the regular season with the DuQuoin Middle School Jr. Classic on April 27. The Jr. Hornets finished 14th at the meet. The Jr. Hornettes finished second.
Twenty other schools competed against the Jr. Hornets at the DMS Jr. Classic on April 28 at DuQuoin High School. Murphysboro took the title with 90 points. DuQuoin was second with 72 points, followed by Chester with 60 points. The Jr. Hornets finished the meet with 19.5 points in fourteenth place.
The Jr. Hornets highest finisher at the meet was Hayden Robinson who finished tied for third in the high jump after clearing a height of 5’2”.
The Jr. Hornettes fared much better in DuQuoin. The Jr. Hornettes finished with 68 points in second place. St. Bruno (Pinckneyville) finished in first place with 82 points. DuQuoin finished in third place with 59.5 points.
The Jr. Hornettes had two first place finishes at the meet, as Daci Finke won the 1600M Run with a time of 6:03.15, and Shelby Thorson won the 7th Grade 100M Dash with a time of 14.12.
Alyssa Cole finished second in the Discus, and Hailey Baugh finished second in the 800M Run. Baugh also finished third in the High Jump.
The Jr. Hornets and Jr. Hornettes then both competed in the SIJHSAA Class S Region 5 Regionals. 12 schools competed at the event. The Jr. Hornets and Jr. Hornettes both captured Regional Championships.
On the boys side, the Jr. Hornets finished with 84 points, just edging second place Aviston. Nashville finished with four first place finishes and two second place finishes as they advanced to the State Track Meet in six different events. The 2018 Class S State Track Meet will be held at the Herrin Sports Complex on May 12. First and Second place finishes advanced to State.

Advancing To State:

Colton Wolters: Discus- 100’3.5”.
Ben Reid: Long Jump- 16’2”.
Hayden Robinson: Shot Put- 37’5”.
Ben Reid, Rylan Hammer, Carson Cook, Ray Habeck: 4X400M Relay- 4:13.54.
Ben Reid: 400M Dash- 59.53.
Carson Cook, Seldon Kozuszek, Rylan Hammer, Aiden Heiman: 7th Grade 4X200M Relay- 1:55.
On the girls side, the Jr. Hornettes finished with 113 points, four points ahead of second place St. Clare (O’Fallon). Aviston and St. Boniface (Edwardsville) finished tied for third place with 44 points.
The Jr. Hornettes advanced to the SIJHSAA Class S State Track Meet in ten different events. Nashville had three first place finishes, and six second place finishes. The 2018 Class S State Track Meet will be held at the Herrin Sports Complex on May 12. First and Second place finishes advanced to State. Hailey Baugh finished third in the high jump but advanced by meeting the state qualifying height.

Alyssa Cole: Discus- 79’4.5”

Hailey Baugh: High Jump- 4’7”
