Hornets Win First Conference Title In Ten Years

The Nashville Hornets track team won their first Conference Championship in ten years. For the first time since the 2007-2008 season, the Nashville Hornets won the SIRR Mississippi Division Championship. The Hornets ran away with the conference crown as they finished with 160 points, which was 33.5 points ahead of second place DuQuoin. Pinckneyville finished in third, followed by Carterville in fourth. Sparta finished in fifth, and Anna-Jonesboro finished in sixth. The Hornets then competed in the Jared Morris Invitational which was held on Monday May 14. The Hornets finished sixth at the Jared Morris Invitational.
The Hornets finished with just three first place finishes, but finished with seven second place finishes, and eight third place finishes at the meet.
Daymeon Baugh finished first in the Triple Jump with a jump of 41’02”. Brandon Schnitker won the 3200M Run with a time of 11:01.54. Tabor Kozuszek got the final first place finish of the meet for Nashville as he cleared 5’09” in the High Jump..
Nashville finished with seven second place finishes at the meet. Gavyn Lietz brought home second place in both the Pole Vault, and the 110M Hurdles. Three relay teams finished in the runner-up position. The 4X200M Relay team of Jackson Aulds, Gavin Love, Caleb Zgonina, and Baugh finished just out of the top spot. Love and Zgonina were a part of the 4X800M Relay team with Landon Davis, and Schnitker that finished second behind Pinckneyville.  The 4X400M Relay team of Baugh, Zgonina, Kozuszek, and Schnitker also finished in second place at the meet.
Finishing third at the conference meet for the Hornets was: Schnitker in the 800M Run, Love in the 1600M Run, Aulds in the 110M Hurdles, Theron Hausner, Caleb Klein, David Arnold, and Tyson Huge in the Freshmen 4X200M Relay, Derek Kirgan in the Shot Put and the Discus, Baugh in the High Jump, and Lietz in the Triple Jump.
Hornets coach Tom Taylor talked about the focus of the team after the meet. “The kids worked very hard today, they have been focused all week, and here we are.” Taylor went on to talk about how it was a team effort. “That’s what it always is. I love seeing it when they do that. You start doing PRs from Kirgan and Sexe in Shot Put and Discus, the boys long jump, triple jump, and pole vault. All the way across the board everybody started getting their goals like they needed to.”
The Hornets then finished off the regular season with the Jared Morris Invitational on May 14. Nashville was taking it easy in this meet as they prepared for the postseason. The Hornets finished with 41 points in the sixth position. Madison won the meet with 116 points. Pinckneyville finished in second, followed by Central in third, Columbia in fourth, and DuQuoin in fifth.
The Hornets finished in first place in two events. The 4X400M Relay team of Kozuszek, Baugh, Aulds, and Schnitker broke the meet record at the Jared Morris Invitational with a time of 3:26.82. Kirgan won the Shot Put with a throw of 45’6”.
Kirgan also finished third in the Discus.
