Hornets Struggle At State

The Hornets track team dominated Sectionals advancing to the State Track Prelims in 10 events, but they struggled in the IHSA Class 1A State Final Prelims, which were held on May 24 at O’Brien Field on the campus of Eastern Illinois University.
Although the Hornets qualified in ten events, athletes scratched out of different events at the meet. Caleb Zgonina scratched out of the 800M Run. Tabor Kozuszek and Brandon Schnitker scratched out of the 400M Dash, and Gavyn Lietz scratched out of the 300M Hurdles.
Lietz did compete in the Pole Vault, the Triple Jump, and the 110M High Hurdles. Lietz did not clear the starting height in the Pole Vault. In the Triple Jump, Lietz finished with a jump of 40’9.5’.In the 110M High Hurdles, Lietz was disqualified for running in the wrong lane.
Daymeon Baugh also competed in the Triple Jump where he would finish with a jump of 40’8.75”..
Jackson Aulds ran in the second heat of the 110M High Hurdles and finished with a time of 16.18.
Kozuszek cleared 5’11” in the High Jump but could not clear the next height..
In the Shot Put, Derek Kirgan threw in the first flight and finished with a throw of 43’2.25”..
The Hornets ran two relays in the Prelims. The team of Kozuszek, Gavin Love, Zgonina, and Schnitker ran the 4X800M Relay. The Hornets finished ninth in their heat with a time of 8:39.29 and did not qualify for the finals.
The 4X400M Relay team of Jackson Aulds, Kozuszek, Baugh, and Schnitker came out of the gate strong, but dropped the baton which cost valuable time. The 4X400M Relay team finished with a time of 3:33.94.
