Mary Jane Phillips

Miss Mary Jane Phillips, 85, of Ashley, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at the Nature Trail Health Care Center, Mount Vernon.

She was born on Apr. 26, 1933, in Carrier Mills, to the late Kenneth and Opal (Broyles) Phillips.

Miss Phillips was a native of Carrier Mills and was a school teacher at Kinmundy Elementary, Pana Elementary, Streator Elementary and Tamaroa 211 Elementary, all in southern Illinois. She was also a missionary exchange teacher for Global Harvesters Foundation, Inc. and taught two years in Guatemala in the ’60s and two years in Brazil ’73-’75. Mary Jane was very active in various school and church functions and was a member of the IEA and NEA. She was a member of the Ashley United Methodist Church, the Illinois and Washington County Retired Teachers Association, and a member of the Ashley Library Board. Miss Phillips was gifted in crafts and created various crafts such as caned chairs, quilts, plastic canvas and puppets and traveled to craft shows all over southern Illinois to sell them.

Surviving are a brother, Kenneth Phillips Jr. and wife, JoAnn; a nephew Terry and wife, Jeanie Phillips and a niece Tammy Phillips and husband, Steve Watkins, all of Colorado Springs, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the Carrier Mills-Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills. The Rev. Jane Laws will officiate. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ashley Public Library and will be accepted by Campagna Funeral Home Ltd in Nashville, who is in charge of arrangements.
