Shirley Clara Finanger died in Salem, Oregon, on Saturday, December 8, 2018, of complications to congestive heart failure. She had just turned seventy-four.
Shirley was born December 6, 1944, in Centralia, Illinois, to Ignatz and Wanda Geppert. She was one of twelve children and grew up on a farm in Nashville, Illinois. After graduating from high school she moved to California and became a flight attendant. She was married to Roald James Finanger on September 12, 1970, in Manhattan Beach, CA, and moved to Salem, Oregon, shortly thereafter.
She settled in West Salem, where she raised her two children, Erika and David. She worked for the State of Oregon as an accountant for 30 years and was a parishoner at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Shirley enjoyed spending time at the cabin she and her husband built on Oakland Bay near Shelton, Washington. She was extremely devoted to her children and grandchildren and loved spending time with them.
She is survived by her husband, Roald (Jim) Finanger; her children Erika Finanger of Portland, Oregon, and David Finanger of Seattle, Washington; her son-in-law Jeff Batin; her grandchildren, Winton and Zoe Hedderick; her siblings Stanley Geppert, Maxine Henry, Georgia Shields, Sr.; Marlene Geppert OSF, Patricia Miller, Eugene Geppert, Robert Geppert, Howard Geppert and Hazel Biggs; and many other in-laws, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Aileene Greten and Germain Geppert; sisters-in-law, Judy Geppert and Marlene Geppert; and nephew Doug Geppert.
Services were held on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Visitation was before the service. Her burial immediately followed the service at Restlawn Cemetery in West Salem.
