James R. Campbell

On Sunday, January 20, 2019, James R. Campbell 73, loving husband and father passed away at home after an extended illness from Agent Orange exposure.

James was born April 23, 1945 at USNH, Marine Corp Base, Camp Pendleton, CA. He was the son of James R. Campbell of Belleville, IL and Elva Lucille Klock of San Diego, CA. He joined the Marine Corp at the age of 18. On June 11, 1966, he was united in marriage to Pauline E. Hagan of San Diego, CA for over 52 years. They raised two daughters, Carolyn and Christine.

James was a 30 year veteran of the United States Marine Corps and attained the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant, retiring May 1992. James served his country with tours in Vietnam in 1965, 1966,

1969 and 1970 as well as numerous tours to Japan, Okinawa, and 19 months during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. After retiring from the military James and Pauline moved to Nashville, IL. He managed AutoZone stores in Centralia, IL and Salem, IL for several years. Later he became an OTR Driver and Trainer for USA Trucking.

James loved all animals from Quarter horses to Minis, to goats, dogs, cats and birds. He often saved the random spring nest of bunnies found while mowing and help his wife Pauline bottle feed kittens. He was known for his quick wit and that mischievous sparkle in his eyes. He was a proud grandfather to 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He lived by the core values of the Marine Corp, Honor, Courage and Commitment. He was a mentor and guiding force in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Semper Fi.

James was preceded in death by his father, James Campbell, his mother Nina and step mother Jane and his son-in-law Richard Alan Arbogast.

He is survived by his wife Pauline E. Campbell of Nashville, IL; two daughters, Carolyn Y Simon, (Robert) of Lincoln, NE. Christine L Jones, (Ron) of Aurora, OH; two sisters, Kim R Christ of Belleville, IL and Cindy S Mikulait of Fairview Heights, IL; eight grandchildren, Aleisia Eilers (Nathan) of Aviston, IL, SSgt. Joshua Arbogast (Carmen) of Fayetteville, NC, James Arbogast of Fairview Heights, IL, Machinist mate second class, Sean Arbogast of San Diego, CA, Kinslee E Campbell and Kylee E Campbell of Lincoln, NE, Aaron Jones of Aurora, OH and Amanda Price (Michael) of Fayetteville, NC. Six Great Grandchildren, Cambri

Nichole Eilers, Cali Renee Eilers, Codyn Eilers of Aviston, IL, Spencer L Price of Fayetteville, NC, Aryana Arbogast and Oliver Arbogast of Fayetteville, NC. Numerous cousins and extended family.

Per the wishes of James and his family, cremation was performed. There will be no public services.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or SSM Hopsice and will be accepted by the Campagna Funeral Home, who is assisting the family with arrangements.
