Hornets Blow Past Teutopolis
With only three games left in the regular season, the Nashville Hornets boys basketball team is playing some of their best ball of the year. The Hornets have won 11 straight games after defeating Sparta and Teutopolis this past weekend. The Hornets have just three matchups remaining in the regular season, all of which are conference games. Nashville faces off against Carterville on February 8, Pinckneyville on February 9, and end the regular season against DuQuoin on February 15.
Nashville had little trouble with Sparta as they traveled to take on the Bulldogs on February 1. The Hornets jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back as they defeated Sparta 61-31.
Nashville led 14-2 after the first quarter, and led 27-8 at the break. By the end of the third quarter, Nashville’s lead had ballooned to 51-20. The result was never in question through the final stanza as the Hornets cruised to a thirty point win.
Carson Parker led Nashville with 17 points. A trio of Hornets finished with eight points apiece as Matt Anderson, Bryce Bultman, and Tristen Hercules finished just short of double figures. Kelton Harre added seven points, followed by Terry Pelczynski with five points. Tanner Bergmann chipped in four points. Jacob Maschhoff and Isaac Turner scored two points apiece off the bench.
The Hornets next contest was at the Rich Herrin Classic in Benton where they matched up against the Wooden Shoes of Teutopolis. Both teams came into the matchup in the top three in the IHSA AP Class 2A Rankings. Nashville went into the matchup ranked #1. Teutopolis went into the matchup ranked #3.
After the two teams were even in the first half, the Hornets dominated the second half of play to roll past Teutopolis 57-39.
The two teams were even through the first until a 5-0 run by the Hornets gave Nashville a 13-8 advantage after eight minutes of play. The Wooden Shoes would battle back in the second quarter. Clint Weber had a big quarter for Teutopolis as the Wooden Shoes were able to even the score before the break. Weber scored eight in the frame and Teutopolis outscored Nashville 16-11 to tie the game at 24 at the break.
It was all Nashville from there. The Hornets dominated the second half of play. “I don’t know if we made a whole lot of adjustments, I just thought that they started missing a few shots. I don’t know if we did a whole lot of adjustments. I’ll be honest with you, I just thought we just kept playing, they missed some shots. I thought our rebounding was really good.” said Coach Wayne Harre after the game.
