Once again the Nashville Hornettes came away with a Regional Championship. The Hornettes cruised through their two games at the IHSA Class 2A Trico Regional to win their third consecutive Regional Championship. The Hornettes defeated Sparta on February 5, before defeating Pinckneyville on February 7. It was the third time this season that Nashville defeated both Sparta and Pinckneyville.
The Hornettes dominated the middle portion of the game as they defeated Sparta 52-24 on February 5.
After falling behind early, the Hornettes took control of the game. Sparta led 5-3 early, but a 14-0 run by Nashville gave the Hornettes the lead for good. At the end of the first, the Hornettes led 19-10.
Sparta struggled to get anything going offensively as the Hornettes defense frustrated the Lady Bulldogs. Nashville opened the second quarter ona 9-0 run and led 28-13 at halftime.
Nashville put the game away for good in the third quarter. Nashville opened the third quarter with another long run, as they scored the first 14 points of the frame. Overall the Hornettes outscored Sparta 18-2 in the frame. In the fourth, the Hornettes were in cruise control as they picked up the win.
The Hornettes connected seven times from behind the arc in the game, to help put away the Lady Bulldogs. Coach Althoff said shooting from behind the arc wasn’t the gameplan, but it was the shots that were open. “I just say take what they give you. That’s the shot we got, and fortunately we knocked enough of them down and it make it hard on them and they couldn’t cover us. It wasn’t just Libby (Ahlers), Kylie (Kozuszek) hit one, Sabrina (Kollbaum) hit a couple. If you spread it out around like that, who are you going to guard.”
The Hornettes were led by Ahlers with 18 points. Kollbaum was also in double figures with 10 points. Rylee Luechtefeld added eight points. Alyssa Cole, and Kozuszek finished with five points apiece. Emily Stern chipped in four points. Jordan Donato rounded out the scoring with two points.
